Sight Words/Phonograms/Word Families

These are the sight words we have learned by memory:  a, and, it, see, the, is  (We flashcard review everyday)

Now that we have finished learning all the single letter alphabet sounds, we are beginning to learn the multi-letter phonogram sounds. I will be sending home booklets to help with home review: (a blue book containing all the single letter sounds your child should by now be familiar with and a light green booklet for your reference of these sounds we are currently learning. (front page list of phonograms, back of same page sounds associated–for your reference to practise at home)  Learning these phonogram sounds is another great aid for helping your child decode words, as they begin the road of reading.  Phonograms learned so far: sh, th, ee, oo, er   (If you have any questions, regarding these booklets, please feel free to contact me via e-mail for further clarification.

Regularly we are working on word families:  at, an, ad, et, og, etc. whereby we put a consonant sound infront of the word family creating a word we can sound out (e.g. c-at=cat, b-at=bat, p-et=pet, d-og=dog) etc. Much of this is large group oral, and the students are doing great with this pre-reading, sounding out skill.

Today, your child brought home a book “Apples” which we have read together several times as a class.  Take a moment and watch your child touch each word with pointer finger and read it back to you.  If unsuccessful, perhaps take time to re-read the story with them.

Planners

Today, I have sent home a planner with your child.  For those of you who have other children in the school system, you are quite familiar with the routine of the planners as another form of communication between parent and teacher. As well, the planner is used to send daily messages that your child will print in their planner, giving them an opportunity to practise their printing skills and give you a glimpse of how they are developing these printing skills.  This planner needs to come back to school EVERYDAY.

This is how the planner works:  Every morning the students will copy a short message.  I will stamp the planner. The planner will go home at the end of each day.  Please take the time to read your child’s planner to stay informed and also to check if there are any notes from the teacher to the parent. (Feel free to send me notes if necessary).  Before your child comes back to school the next day, please initial the planner.  This lets me know that you have read their message.

Thank you for your assistance in making these planners a meaningful avenue of learning!
