We finished building our community called “Folkertstown”. It was a great learning project. Each student built their home and placed it on the roads named after teachers. Each student built a building of necessity for our community, and placed it in the town. We had good discussions regarding where things should go and why, based on our learning of community needs. Some students even brought in extras to enhance the look of our community.
In connection with our learning about what makes a community in Social Studies, we are working on a class project of building a “pretend” community using the knowledge we have learned. We named our community “Folkertstown” and began with making roads within our community, which we named after teachers and workers in our school. This past week we each built a house out of Lego and chose a spot in our community to put it. (We also chose vehicles from our Car Center to park beside our homes) This week we will begin building important buildings/places that our community needs. (e.g, school, stores, restaurants, gas stations, churches, airport, hospital, police/fire station, etc.) Each student will have an opportunity to build one or more of these. Here are some pictures of the start of “Folkertstown”.
The month of February we spent a lot of time reading stories and having discussions about friendship, kindness and love. Our memory work for the month (1 John 4:7-10) echoed the theme of loving one another as God loves us.
We read the story “A Salmon For Simon” and our art project this week tied in nicely with it.

Matthew 28:5-7
The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”
Here is our last Spelling list before Spring Break! I am pleased at the progress the students are making, not only with the words learned but how some of the students are beginning to apply this Spelling knowledge in writing a sentence. I will introduce the words on Monday, March 6th and test them on Friday, March 10th. Here are the words: law, lay, soft, path, ball, one, five, year, house, get
