Mrs.Folkerts Grade 1 Adventures in Primary 

First of all, a big thank you for all the lovely gifts bestowed upon me.  I feel so blesssed!  Wishing you all the peaceful beauty of the season, and I hope you are enjoying time together with family and friends!  Merry Christmas!

By now you will have noticed that I sent home a small envelope containing books for your child to keep up with their reading over Christmas break.  Please note that I will need these books returned after the holidays regardless of their progress.  I do appreciate your support!!!!!!

Science:  Just finished the beginning of of several habitats which we will continue after Christmas.  Polar habitat—see our pictures of the snowy owl.

This week we visited Sweden, Germany, and Brazil.  We study their customs, learn to say”Merry Christmas” in their language, color the flag of their country, and listen to Christmas carols for each country.  It has been an awesome experience of learning and respect for other cultures. Next and final week:  Russia, England, France!  Has your child shared some things learned?

Friday, December 16th – Primary Christmas Concert @ 10:30 am and early dismissal – 11:30 am (come dressed for the concert!)

December 17th – January 2nd – Christmas Holidays

Lots of creative fun this week, and Christmas snacks to enjoy! (thank you to parents!!!)

We made 2-D and 3-D Christmas trees, decorated cookies, and added some Christmas balls to our bulletin board.  Today we had a shared lunch with the other Grade 1 class. (all boys in Miss Evans room, all girls in my room–what fun!)

Christmas is in the air!

Gr. 1  students will form a choir of stars in the dark night sky. They are asked to wear:

a. Bottoms: navy blue or black pants or skirt and tights. HRA uniform pants are acceptable.

b. Tops: navy blue or black long-sleeved tops. HRA uniform sweatshirts are acceptable.

c. Avoid: any other colour of clothing, including white and grey.

Students need to arrive at school on the morning of the concert (Friday December 16) wearing their navy blue/black full attire.

Here are some of the things we did this week:

•  Made a snowman craft with our Grade 5 buddies (see picture)
•  Created a colorful paper chain counting down the days until Christmas vacation (see picture)
•  Decorated a Christmas bell and Christmas lights for our hallway bulletin board display (see picture)
•  Learned about how Christmas is celebrated in Mexico, Australia, and Netherlands (in addition, we are learning to say “Merry Christmas” in different languages, and learning the flags of each country)  We will continue this week, looking at Sweden, Germany, and Brazil)
• It has been a fun-filled week! Still more to come this week. Thank you to parents who provided treats for this week, and to those who plan to bring treats this coming week!

We will be having our Primary Christmas Concert on Friday, December 16th at 10:30am. We are working hard on our songs and looking forward to performing for you.

Grade 1 students will be part of the Primary Choir and are asked to wear all black or all navy.
